I am excited to offer Burrowing Owl monitoring sessions as part of my 2024 Events! I signed up to be a designated monitor through the Urban Prairies Project, put on by the Butterfly Pavilion. They are hoping to gather important information about Burrowing Owl behaviors, numbers, and threats over several monitoring sites in order to help shape legislation to increase protections for these birds (and the other animals, insects, and plants within the habitat). This project will also help determine where Burrowing Owls are no longer being seen. There will be additional information given to each participant at each session. The sessions are “sit and watch” and we will spend a lot of time being quiet and making observations. There may be some hiking out to locations involved, as well as some general scouting of the area to add observations to our data sheets. If you want to learn more about our local Burrowing Owls, be involved in citizen science, and help shape our future, please consider signing up to join me! Special Statement about Burrowing Owl Monitoring

This is a special research project through The Butterfly Pavilion designed to help local municipalities understand Burrowing Owl populations, which in turn may shape future legislation at a local, state, regional, or even national level. By participating in this session you agree to: follow all instructions, be respectful (no loud noises/talking), and make honest/accurate observations for data collection purposes. There will be data collection sheets used at each session and these will be submitted to The Butterfly Pavilion after completion of the session. You will need to bring your binoculars or spotting scope, a chair to sit in, and a camera if you wish to take any photos. Since this is a research session, it is limited to 3 people per session. We will carpool to the parking location and monitor the area for up to 1 hour. Please only sign up if you are willing to follow all these guidelines.
